One of the things in tunnel construction that is often something to worry about is concrete spalling. I never even heard about it until I started working for the city on tunnels on the south side of town. Apparently they were made with a high performance concrete and never treated to protect against spalling. The more research I did the more I realized that we can do something about it. One of the main things done to help prevent this from happening is the use a spray that goes right on the concrete itself and allows the heat transfer to happen at slower rate of speed.
