Horseback travel

I picked up a copy of the South Dakota vacation guide and was thumbing through it when the thought struck me, just how many miles of highway does that state have? I mean if you look on the map there are not a whole lot of cities in the state and what ones are there are really spread out. It must take hours and hours just to get from one place to the other. What did the do in the days of horseback transportation? It must have taken days and days to get around, so I doubt there was too much traveling unless there was a really good reason.
