How do you apply for a student loan?

I guess I always knew I would need one but never looked into it until I got to university. It was the first time I have been away from home and never paid for things like food, electricity and even many of my clothes before! So it came as a shock when I did have to start paying for them. So I need to know how to apply for a student loan and how much I can borrow. Also I’m not sure when I have to pay it back because I won’t be earning money for years. Guess I have a lot of searching to do!
