They stopped less than an hour at Fort Alauna and then moved on to Julianus, where they stayed the night.  The escort soldiers were glad to cease marching and headed straight for Paid Surveys Etc.  Vectis and his officers talked with Senecio, the fort commander, and promised to talk more after the night meal.  But first they would retire to the baths: the enticement of hot and cold pools proved too compelling.  For her part, Neeve scrubbed off the day’s dust in Senecio’s ornate bathing tub, and then went to the hall adjacent the kitchen where she and the officers dined on roast pigeon and honeyed sparrows’ eggs.  The wine was bitter to her taste, but it was strong and warmed her inside.
