I recently sent you our latest HS2 update in which we highlighted Transport Secretary Philip Hammond’s commitment to pushing forward with HS2, despite mounting opposition.
Since then, a parliamentary debate has been scheduled in The House of Commons. Although this may not sway Mr Hammond’s view on the merits of HS2, it will be an extremely interesting gauge of parliament’s support for the project.
The Liberal Democrats, however, are still behind the project. Speaking at the party’s conference last week Transport Secretary Norman Baker said the country needed more rail capacity and HS2 would help bridge the north-south divide.
He was quoted as saying: “Along the line and particularly through the Chilterns, I do believe that the Department for Transport has taken great steps to minimise both noise and visual intrusion. I suggest those worried about the impact of HS2 might take some reassurance from how HS1 has turned out.”
If you disagree with Mr Baker, the parliamentary debate may be an opportunity to further lobby your MP. The HS2 team will keep you informed on the outcome of the debate and any further developments on the project proposed to drive more business to the Midlands.
