First Aid in the Wilderness All Depends on You

August 18th, 2009

Imagine you and a buddy are on a hike in the mountains, five miles from the nearest paved road. Suddenly a rock turns under your friend’s foot and he takes a tumble. When he comes to rest he’s got a twisted ankle and an ugly gash on his leg. What happens next? It can turn out really bad or okay, depending on your wilderness first aid skills, and the supplies you’ve brought with you. Realistically it’s impossible to prepare for every possibility, but some thoughtful preparation can equip you for the kinds of first aid needs that you’re most likely to encounter.
