Gastric Bypass Surgery Or Diet And Exercise
July 23rd, 2008
After 40 years of experience with various forms of weight loss surgery, and with hundreds of thousands of procedures now being performed every year as obesity has grown to epidemic proportions, it might seem incredible that we are continuing to engage in the old argument of whether or not diet and exercise ought to continue to be our first line of attack but that is exactly the position we find ourselves in today. More incredible however is the fact that this has little if anything to do with the medical case for gastric bypass surgery and everything to do with the fact that the insurance companies continue to do everything in their power to keep payments for weight loss surgery to a minimum. Keeping costs down for plan holders in general is of course laudable, but are we doing so at the expense of people who are genuinely in need of surgery as the only workable solution to their problem?
