Health Insurance in Florida

August 7th, 2008

Every state has different regulations when it comes to health care and Florida Health Insurance is no exception. It is important before becoming insured to understand how the laws in your state affect you.

One thing to familiarize yourself with is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This allows you to get credit if you go from one health insurance plan to another. Without this, you would get no credit for prior insurance and would end up paying a lot more for a new policy. This is a federal policy that affects the state of Florida as well.

This same act also means that you might not have to pass waivers for health insurance. Meaning that typically if you are buying a new policy you have to be in good health or the company can deny you insurance based on a high risk. However, if you have had recent health coverage you can be exempt from these rules.

To get more information on these issues you should contact your state health insurance board. You can explain your situation to them and they can give you options as far as what the best idea is for you to more forward in obtaining health insurance.
