Repression is not good when quitting smoking
May 31st, 2009
Most of the time, people quitting smoking see their desire to smoke as their enemy. Mostly they try to ignore it and hope it goes away soon. Some people can shut out the urge completely, so that they don’t feel it at all, even in the early stages of stopping. This is called repression.
Repression is a coping mechanism that can be helpful at times. As one very practical example, if you run from danger and sprain an ankle, the pain can often be repressed and only becomes apparent when you reach safety.
Repressing emotions can also be a way of coping with difficult situations. You may repress your anger when an outburst could create trouble. You may repress sadness in order to put on a brave face over some tragedy.
