What exactly is a medical assistant job description?

What exactly is a medical assistant job description? I know that medical assistants work alongside doctors, and I know they work directly with patients. I just don’t know exactly what they do. Often, licensed practical nurses or even registered nurses work alongside doctors in private practices, clinics, and hospitals. What is the difference between what they do and what medical assistants do? How do the job duties differ? I am thinking about entering the medical field after high school, and I do not know if I want to be a nurse or a medical assistant.
