What Is The Best Cluster Headache Treatment?

June 16th, 2008

Fortunately cluster headaches, which can be unbelievably painful, are fairly rare and strike only about one person in every three hundred. To put this into perspective, migraines affect about one person in ten. Unlike most other headaches, cluster headaches are very difficult to treat and the usual wonder drugs such as aspirin, Tylenol and Ibuprofen which most of us reach for when we have a headache will have little if any affect at all. At present there are two main forms of cluster headache treatment. The first is to breathe pure oxygen for several minutes once the headache has arrived and the second is to use a range of second generation triptan drugs which have been developed to treat migraines. These however need to be taken in a fast acting form and this normally means either by nasal spray or by injection.
