Why is wild cherry bark in my cough syrup?
March 12th, 2008
Wild cherry, sometimes known as chokecherry, is a tree that produces small white flowers and purplish fruits. The bark of the young wild cherry tree is what is used for health purposes. Wild cherry bark was original used as nutritional health supplements to treat diarrhea. Today, wild cherry bark is used as a cough suppressant (particularly effective for bronchitis), and to help whooping cough and asthma. It contains prussic acid, which is known to calm the nerves associated with the coughing reflex. It is also used to sooth the after affects of allergy attacks. Many over the counter cough syrups list it in their ingredients. Now you know why.
