Antique Pianos and how their construction evolved

March 14th, 2008

During the 17th century, and most of the 18th century, pianos were built relatively simply. These antique pianos then differed greatly to the pianos we know today. For example, the keys were black and the sharps and flats were white during this time. Also, dynamics were extremely hard to emphasize, and the music had more of a robotic feel with a lack of emotion. However, during the end of the 18th century, many piano builders living in Vienna were key figures in the evolution of the piano as we now recognize it today. These craftsmen altered the color of the keys and made the cases of the pianos longer and heavier and used pedals to alter the tone of the instrument. This enabled the performer to play more dramatic and emotion oriented music.
