Cleaning and painting conservation
April 25th, 2008
Cleaning is an irreversible treatment and one of the most demanding areas of painting conservation. Cleaning requires the skills of paintings conservators who have years of formal training and practical experience. Cleaning is accomplished by recirculating solvent sprays. These units reportedly reduce solvent waste by 50 to 75%. A high quality cleaning center can really make the whole process more efficient. Cleaning is normally carried out using a special type of bleach which is then rinsed out. We are often asked for a "ball park" estimate for a painting conservation treatment without seeing the job requirements.
