Some metal detectors are very simple and can detect any type of metal through clothing or dirt, sand etc using a frequency pulse and reading the return ping. Usually metal has a very resonant return ping and so this is registered as metal. New more sophisticated metal detectors use micro processors to calculate the return ping and more. But basically, using a range of frequencies and calculations the detector can narrow down and figure out for you what you may be digging up before you even start. With sonar technologies you can even see the shape of the object in the LCD screen!
